The Norwegian Guide Federation was Established 1984. We do not have an ordinary headquarters, but we use the address of the elected chairman. To day the address of the federation is: C/O Kristian Bredby, Jon Smestadsvei 4, 0379 Oslo.

The Norwegian Guide Federation wants to strengthen the Guides position in the travel market. The Federation wants to protect the interests of Guides socially, economically and by being a spokesman for Guides domestically and internationally.
3. What is the process to become a qualified tourist guide in Norway?
The Norwegian Federation organises local Guide courses, based on a curriculum. If somebody outside of the Federation organises Guide courses, the curriculum and exam (written and practical) have to be recognised by the Federation's executive. Usually a Guide course run for two semesters Sept- May, and demands about 130 hours study, both self study and classes. The exam consists of a written questionnaire and a practical (often by bus) part. Examiners should be from higher educational institutions or universities.

The local Branches arrange seminars, visits to the museums they co-operate with and so on.

Guides obtain a badge to wear, together with jackets or similar. From the National Federation in Norway the Guide gets an ID card. Members of a local branch are automatically members of the Federation in Norway.

There are about 600 members in the Norwegian Federation. Their backgrounds are for example teachers, employees from travel businesses, and most members have a higher degree from their education.
